Current Fire Station

The current Fire Station, located at 42 Water St., was constructed in 1966. The current facility has 4 truck bays suitable for fire/rescue trucks and 2 ambulance bays, with the third Peninsula Ambulance Corps (PAC) ambulance parked outside. The Fire Department uses approximately 60% of the space; PAC leases the remainder on a year-to-year basis.

Issues with the Current Facility

  • Low doors
  • Age/maintenance
  • Difficult exit from Water St. to Main St. or Union St.
  • Lack of sleeping quarters/break area
  • Exhaust removal system
  • Gear washing facilities
  • Separate cooking facilities
  • Other modern requirements for fire stations
  • Some residents believe there are better uses for the facility and the land given its attractive, harborside location

Benefits of the Current Facility

  • The Town already owns it
  • The increased cost of custom (low clearance) fire apparatus is currently manageable–approximately $250,000 / vehicle
  • No urgent need to relocate
